During this course Lucie Galvani will introduce participants to the art of raised gesso gilding. Techniques will be learnt and developed that have been used in manuscript illumination for centuries. Compared to other gilding techniques, gilding on gesso produces one of the nicest 'shines'; it has a molten gold effect and the relief enables the gold to catch the light
from many different angles.
Moreover in this workshop participants will apply the raised gesso technique to a rose window design. The gilding will be used to render the beauty of the tracery (the stone work); the background will be painted using natural pigments, and the choice of motif, pattern or colour will be left to you. Some suitable designs will be provided but if you have something in mind we can see together how it can work for a raised gilding. The finished piece should be about 10x10 cm.
Lucie Galvani has recently graduated from the Master's Degree programme at the
Prince's School of Traditional Arts where she specialised in techniques of manuscript illumination (gilding on gesso and paper and painting with traditional pigments).
Prior to that she obtained a professional certificate of traditional bookbinding in France.
